Agency description: NC Division of Highways sponsors the Adopt a Highway program. Its purpose is to decrease the amount of litter on North Carolina’s roadsides and to improve the beauty and quality of the environment.  The Adopt A Highway program saves taxpayers more than $3 million annually in roadside cleanup costs.  It is one of the largest anti-litter programs in the nation, representing more than 6,000 groups and including nearly 150,000 volunteer participants statewide.  Jackson County’s Adopt a Highway program is ranked fourth in the state for the number of miles adopted. Sections are two miles and recycling bags, gloves, and other equipment are provided.  After pick up, a truck will be sent out to pick up trash bags.  NCDOT posts signs, at each end of the adopted section to show group/individual participation in the program.

Time commitment: “Adoption” is for one year, of which, litter pick up must be done four times, two pick ups will be in April and October.

Skills, experiences, and special requirements: None.
