Location: AWAKE is located at 563 West Main Street in downtown Sylva. It is in Rooms #5 and #10 of the Downtown Offices, across from Andretti's Restaurant. Agency description: A private, nonprofit organization, AWAKE advocates for physically and sexually abused children by employing various child services of Jackson County. AWAKE also educates the community in the problem of child abuse and its prevention. Volunteers work to help support the Center financially; do community education about AWAKE and child abuse; promote advocacy for the Child Advocacy Center; enhance the Center with art work; provide maintenance and assistance with tasks as they emerge for center operation; and assist with personal safety curriculum provided through the presentation of a puppet show (twenty minutes in length) presented to kindergarten children in local schools during the Spring. Time commitment: A flexible schedule will be worked out on a one-on-one basis to allow the volunteer to provide what time they can to accomplish assigned tasks and to ensure productive involvement that is mutually beneficial to the needs of AWAKE and the volunteer. Skills, experiences, and special requirements: Individuals must have a sincere concern for the welfare and safety of children in Jackson County. Volunteers, dedicated to the needs of children, should be able to maintain confidentiality and sign a confidentiality form. The coordinator matches volunteers with specific projects as scheduled and approved by the Director (e.g. fundraising), which may be worked on at home, at the office during regular business hours, or after hours as the project dictates. |
