Agency description: The mission of this program is to build on the natural bond between caring adults and children who need love and attention. The Foster Grandparent program seeks to enable persons aged 60 and over to remain physically and mentally active and to enhance their self-esteem by participation in a needed community service of providing unconditional love, attention, and encouragement to children. This program serves Jackson, Haywood, Swain, and Graham Counties, as well as the Cherokee Reservation. Volunteers are assigned to one or more children at a site (a school, daycare, or program). This site will be as close to your home as possible. Assistance with transportation will be provided or reimbursement for gas each month. A stipend is currently paid and cannot be counted against any benefit or public assistance that you may currently receive. Time commitment: 20 hours of service each week. Skills, experiences, and special requirements: Volunteers are required to be 60 or older. |
