Location: Volunteers
meet at Harris Regional Hospital, 59 Hospital Road in Sylva.
Agency description:
The Children's Fund provides "sock monkeys"
to pediatric patients in the hospital; volunteers can make and sell the
"sock monkeys" (proceeds go to the Children's Fund). The fund also
recognizes "invisible" children in the community with non-traditional achievements.
Awards and Bonds are given to graduating middle and high school students
who have been selected for this honor. Staff members sometimes follow
high school students after graduation, encouraging them to seek additional
educational experiences. A Volunteer might: 1) make sock monkeys
(can participate in any part of their production that is comfortable for
them). 2) Use the sock monkeys for a fundraiser to benefit the Children's
fund. 3) Distribute the sock monkeys to pediatric patients at the hospital.
4) Initiate a sock monkey "sewing circle." Volunteers may also speak to
local groups about these programs.
Time commitment:
Varies.
Skills, experiences,
and special requirements: None.
